Discover Chitral and the Kalash Valleys

Chitral lies in the far north-west of Pakistan, in the shadow of Tirich Mir (7,708m), the highest peak of the Hindu Kush. It is a land of fruit orchards, fast rivers, wooden villages and famously warm hospitality.

Hidden in three side valleys, Bumburet, Rumbur and Birir, live the Kalasha people, a small community with their own language, colorful dress, music and ancient beliefs. Their way of life, recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, is one of the most fascinating cultures you can experience in South Asia.

This 5-day Kalash Chitral tour travels from Islamabad through the Swat Motorway and Lowari Tunnel to Ayun, then by 4×4 jeep into the Kalash Valleys, and finally to Chitral town with its historic mosque, bazaar and museum. We can also time your trip for the Kalash festivals of Chilam Joshi in May and Uchal in August.

Kalash Chitral Tour Itinerary

A compact 5-day cultural route with private transport and an experienced local guide.

Day 1

Islamabad to Ayun Valley

Pickup from Islamabad or Rawalpindi and a scenic drive via the Swat Motorway and the Lowari Tunnel into Chitral District. Arrive in Ayun Valley in the evening. Overnight in Ayun.

Day 2

Ayun Village Walk

A relaxed day walking through Ayun village, along its ancient water channels and fruit-laden orchards, meeting local families and enjoying the peaceful pace of life. Overnight in Ayun.

Day 3

Kalash Valley: Bumburet

A 4×4 jeep ride takes us into Bumburet, the largest Kalash valley. Visit the Kalash museum, the old cemetery with its carved Gandau statues, and Kalash homes with our local guide. Overnight in Ayun or Bumburet.

Day 4

Chitral Town

A 45-minute drive to Chitral town. Visit the Shahi Mosque, the old bazaar and the Chitral Museum, with views of Tirich Mir on a clear day. Overnight in Chitral.

Day 5

Chitral to Islamabad

Drive back to Islamabad through the Lowari Tunnel and Swat, arriving in the evening. End of the tour.

The Kalasha are a small indigenous community living in three valleys of Chitral. They have their own language, traditional dress, music and religious beliefs, which set them apart from the surrounding region.

Is it respectful to photograph Kalash people?

Always ask for permission first, especially with women and children, and respect sacred places. Our guide will explain local customs so you can visit respectfully.

Can this tour include a Kalash festival?
